Case: I want to make a choice, I do not want to do my work.
In the class I am interning in, there is a girl who has Kanner's Type Autism. She has to do an activity everyday where two cards with an animal on each are placed in front of her and she is told to identify whichever animal they tell her. About three times into this, she will completely lose focus and start to pretend as if she is really sleepy and wants to "make a choice" which is what they do in their free time in the classroom. They can choose an item to play with. What can be done about this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
In this case, I would offer a sort of rewards system. Does the girl have to do this during the entire free time period? If not, keep her on track by telling her that once she gets through the set of cards then she may indeed make a choice. Perhaps even explain to her politely that sometimes in life we don't get to make choices. If she seems to have mastered the set of animal cards it might be best to move on to a different activity. Depending on her reading level you might consider adding a few cards that have simple animal names rather than the pictures, such as "bat", "dog" or "cat" just to mix it up. If she is unable to read at all, then try different picture cards. Go on to something like food, or something she is not familiar with. It could be that she needs a challenge to keep her interested.

Comments: Yes, implementing a reward system is crucial for students who lack focus. If they do not want to do the work they will just end up with more.

Comments: Some pars of this solution might yield good results. Since the student has a disability it might not be appropriate to deviate from the script (this might be part of her goals). More information is needed.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I am currently volunteering in a classroom of students who have special needs, and one of the things that we deal with are the students wanting to "make a choice" for their free time. Another thing that we deal with, though, is students "avoiding" situations. You have to be able to settle the student and tell them that instead of "avoiding" their work, they must complete their work to then "make a choice". For these reasons, I fully support this solution.

Comments: I think this is a great idea to keep her mind occupied. She may just be bored and adding new things could keep her focus rather than doing the same old thing.

Comments: Letting them know that they can have free time if they finish is usually a great motivator for students. They will be more inclined to work on the assignments placed in front of them quicker so they can play. It also is a good idea to mix things up. Continuously using the same cards can get boring for her, so she may need more of a challenge, whether be it words, or different types of pictures.
