Case: Spelling Tests
Many teachers have done away with traditional spelling tests, but in my third grade classroom last year, I saw the negative influence upon students, especially in their writing. Though phonics instruction was provided early on in their education, the lack of spelling instruction resulted in their lack of knowledge of spelling and recognizing words within different texts. Should spelling tests be implemented again, or are they too outdated for today's students?

I think spelling tests should be in the classroom still. Although we have spellcheck and other tools to help us with spelling in today's day, children need to know words on their own. What happens when they are writing on paper and don't have a computer? We cannot become solely reliant on technology, we still need students to learn spelling. |

| Comments: I agree with your solution, I think it is foolish to rely solely on technology. If a student is asked later in their educational career to write a paper or essay, the student shouldn't have to type it out to be corrected on spelling then go back to write it. Students should still have spelling tests to further their knowledge of semantics and how words are produced. |

| Comments: I agree that technology is now at our students immediate disposal, however, knowing how to spell is critical. Think about how many times you've received a text with misspelled words. |

| Comments: I completely agree. There are going to be many instances when a student will not have access to spell check or other technological resources, and in those situations spelling is a useful skill. |

| Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I feel that spell check is a great tool to use when typing up a document on the computer, but students also need to practice spelling and writing out words on their own on PAPER in order to learn the spellings of words. In addition to learning the correct spellings of words and phrases, spelling tests can also help with penmanship. |
