Case: One of your students tells you that he is gay
One of your students tells you that he is gay. The student is crying and wants to talk to you because he is having trouble "fitting in." What would be the right action(s)?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think that you need to encourage the student. He does not need a councilor, being gay is not a mental problem. It does not matter if his parents support it or not either. In fact, he might have told you before he told his parents, because he is frightened of the repercussions. I think it is best to encourage him to be strong and loving and to follow his heart.

Comments: I don't agree with this because counselors are there to deal with these kinds of situations. They would help the student the best way.

Comments: You are right that it is not a mental problem but wrong in the sense that you say he will not need a counselor. Coming out is a very emotional and hard thing to do most of the time and counselors have training in how to handle highly emotional students and their corresponding problems.

Comments: While " being gay" isn't a mental problem, the implications of coming out with this information can cause some terrible problems with peers and family members. The student is obviously distraught about this and need professional help to sort out how to deal with the rest of the world.

Comments: I agree to encourage the student but referring the student to a counselor is not because it is a "mental problem". A counselor will be able to privately talk about all the thought the student is having and not to "resolve" a problem with that.

Comments: Councilors do more than help with "mental problems" therefore a councilor who's job is to help students is a good resource to point them to.

Comments: No one is saying being gay is a mental problem nor is that what counselors are only good for! The counselor is made to help students who are struggling and this kid obviously is because he's crying and wants someone to talk to and sometimes teacher's aren't comfortable with that. This is what counselors are for and he could really benefit from one.
