Case: Uninvolved Parent
Mrs. Fish has a student in her 1st grade class whose parents have several children and is not involved in any of their school work. Sometimes the child doesn't show up for school and sometimes the student comes to school hungry, tired, or dirty. Mrs. Fish knows that there may be money issues, especially with so many children, but what can she do to help motivate these parents and students?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think it is best for Mrs. Fish to visit the child's home along with a social worker. I suspect there are some major issues happening here beneath the surface (and beneath the poverty even) that need to be addressed. You can not necessarily fix the parents lives so that they will be better parents, but Mrs. Fish should still do everything in her power to fix the child's life. |

Comments: I agree. I think it is important for the teacher to maybe visit the parents especially with a social worker so that the right actions can be taken. As you said there isn't a whole lot the teacher can do once the student is in the hands of the parents, but it is important she has an idea of the home life so that she can maybe make adjustments in the classroom to help accommodate the child. |

Comments: This method is somewhat of a last resort. I would suggest maybe trying to open a dialogue wit the parents first before bringing a social worker in. |

Comments: I agree with this statement, setting up a home visit with the family and a social worker would be beneficial to getting the parents involved and making sure everything is alright at home. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would do exactly this. I feel that if at all possible, the teacher should become involved through the school with a social worker to try and get to the bottom of the problem that is lying within the child's home. |

Comments: Absolutely the child is partly the teachers responsibility since they are in their class, and they should do whatever they can. |

Comments: I think that the teacher visiting the child's home is crossing a huge line. I think it's a good idea to alert a social worker and they can take care of a home visit if needed but the actual teacher visiting the home is a bit unprofessional to me. |

Comments: I don't believe a social worker should get involved unless you truly know the situation at home. Maybe after the first home visit. |

Comments: I feel like if the situation gets worse, than some action needs to happen but I wouldn't go as far as a social worker unless there is a situation to be reported. |

Comments: I agree, a home visit with the guidance of a school social worker may be necessarily. It is important to ensure the child is cared for at home and is raised in a safe environment, as these things will impact the child' learning and general well-being. |
