  Case: Commentary is not Necessary
I have a student in my 2nd grade class who just transferred from Chile. He is very loud and outspoken. He constantly interrupts the other students and says very inappropriate things to others. He sometimes struggles to understand what his peers and teachers are saying because of the language barrier. I think that his behavior is his way of coping and dealing with the major change in his life. What should I do to address this in a sensitive way not to shut him down completely?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I think that this situation needs to be handled delicately. I think the main way is to let him ramble here and there, but to keep him from saying rude things to other people. Once you reward him for chiming in with positive and uplifting and well thought out ideas, and show him that rudeness gets him nowhere, he will start to adopt a more positive social behavior.

It is not going to be easy, and it will take years to get him on the same level with everyone else.

Comments: This does not address the issue of speaking out and interrupting. Even if it becomes more positive that is still only one step towards fixing the issue all together.

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this situation. I feel that this approach may hurt the student rather than help the student because it is completely forgetting that there is a language barrier. You cannot reward good behavior and punish the bad if the student cannot even understand the directions in the first place.

Comments: I think that this focuses on the belief that the students' behavior is 'wrong', when it most probably is a matter of cultural difference.

Comments: I think it might be confusing for the student if his inappropriate behavior is only corrected half of the time. The student needs to be aware of the behavioral issues and the approaches being taken to correct it.

Comments: This solution is not useful because it means condoning misbehavior. Allowing the students to ramble in certain instances will not set high expectations for the child or help increase his learning abilities while in this transition period.
