Case: "Clicks"
As a teacher in an ESOL classroom, you see that your students are growing into small groups, or "clicks", based on their nationality. While they do share similarities, and find comfort in sharing those, it has turned into more. When trying to do group work, the students refuse to group together outside of their clicks, and arguments are beginning to stem between the two groups. How do you handle this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would suggest possibly allowing the students to sit close to their "clicks" but in group time have them separate into other groups. |

Comments: I do not think it would help the students by sitting close to their "clicks" because I don't think they would focus so much on the teacher when they are teaching or not paying attention during group work. Instead I would have a class discussion on working together, diversity, etc. to remind them that everyone is human and in the real world you will not always be with your friends. |

Comments: Encouraging the "clicks" in any way is not beneficial to you as a teacher or the students themselves. It makes it appear that you are giving in to the students and they can take advantage of you. Separate them and have them interact with all different unique people. |

Comments: I don't believe this is the right option for this sort of thing. If you allow them to stay within their "clicks" they won't learn any better. As the case mention they argue and refuses to leave their "clicks". |

Comments: I would not do this, only because the fact that arguments are starting. Students are allowed to have friends, however "clicks" should not be tolerated, especially if certain students are left out, or arguments between clicks are starting. |

Comments: I disagree because the students' clicks are an issue and this solution seems to tolerate that in the classroom. Having them sit next to one another will further their desire to stay together. |

Comments: I think that separating them wholly would make them stubborn and stop listening, so only separating them when in groups so they learn to collaborate productively. |
