Case: "R" rated video during class time
Your students have worked hard preparing for an exam, and they are asking that you reward them by showing an unapproved "R" rated video during class time. One of the students rents the movie and brings it to class. Previously, you had seen the movie and you think it is ok. Were any ethics principles violated?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
What grade level are the students? I remember multiple R rated movies being shown to me from teachers in high school, movies about world war II and other such things.

I think it is a real mistake to not allow a movie to be shown if it has educational qualities and is not just being shown for entertainment.

I don't care what the media center or advisory board thinks either. Those people are such hypocrites.

It is our duty as teachers to not hold back information about the world.

Comments: I think that this solution does not follow the proper protocol required within a school system. It is important to provide students with information, but it needs to be done the right way.

Comments: Whoa whoa whoa. A) R rated movies may have been shown in your class, but I promise you they were approved to be educational and parents signed forms before they were shown. B) the case already says this is for entertainment, not part of a lesson C) You really SHOULD care what the advisory boards say, because disregarding them can mean the end of your career and D) It is NOT our duty as teachers to expose students to everything in the world. We are there to teach, we are not parents, and should not act as if it is our duty to decide what is and is not appropriate.

Comments: Some parents may not be okay with their children seeing an R rated movie, even if it was educational. If the movie was educational, parents should have been notified beforehand.

Comments: Although as teachers it is our duty to inform students, it's also are duty to abide by the rules set by the administration for a reason. If not for the students, both the sake of ones own job.
