Case: Cultural Diversity
Juan is from EL Salvador and is new to his 8th grade middle school. He brings in several books from his from his 8th grade class t hat are from EL Salvador. The books have gender defamation statements towards women. In his culture women are submissive and secondary to males. How do you explain to Juan that the culture is different in the United States without restricting his beliefs?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I believe that any belief outside of gender equality is wrong. While I can't necessarily condemn his books, I can lead the class in a discussion on women's roles and men's roles. I think it is essential to demonstrate the strength and character of both genders and to promote an atmosphere where mutual respect and honor is paramount. |

Comments: While you may not have the same beliefs and values it is still important to recognize cultural differences and be sure to handle the situation in a way so as not to offend Juan and bash his personal beliefs. This is a sticky situation and it may be best to consult a counselor on the matter. |

Comments: If I were in this situation, I would not use this solution (at least not right away). This is because the debate/discussion could cause the other students in the class to gang up on the new diverse student. I feel that a lecture should be done, prior to any class discussions, to teach students about the different view points of other people from around the world have on men, women, and their equalities. |

Comments: Yes, although we might not agree with his books we can turn it into a learning opportunity through a guided discussion. |

Comments: I think this would bring too much attention to the student and perhaps embarrass him. It would be best to resolve this situation quietly and by communicating with the student's parents in order to be respectful of his culture. |
