Case: I want to make a choice, I do not want to do my work.
In the class I am interning in, there is a girl who has Kanner's Type Autism. She has to do an activity everyday where two cards with an animal on each are placed in front of her and she is told to identify whichever animal they tell her. About three times into this, she will completely lose focus and start to pretend as if she is really sleepy and wants to "make a choice" which is what they do in their free time in the classroom. They can choose an item to play with. What can be done about this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It sounds like she is bored. She may actually be getting sleepy as well. It may be helpful to have the student get up and change locations at this point and work on a different task. |

Comments: While I agree that she may be bored and that moving around is a good idea I don't agree that she might be getting sleepy. If it only occurs when this time of day rolls around it would usually mean she doesn't want to do it. Letting her move to another location but working on the same task might help keep her focus, especially if it's somewhere she can't see the other students having fun so she doesn't feel left out. You can try mixing the cards up, by using different objects and words but keep her focused on the same task, especially if this is supposed to be occurring every day. |

Comments: This solution does not address learning behaviors in depth. Simply moving around the room will not work to engage the student. In fact, it might prove to be disruptive. |
