Case: Visually Impaired Student
Mrs. White has a student who is visually impaired. The student works with a vision teacher three times a week, but the teacher pulls the student away from instruction to work with her. The vision teacher does not collaborate with classroom teacher about teaching methods to help the student, so the teacher feels like she is not serving the student appropriately. Aside from preferential seating and enlarging texts on assignments, what are some other ways that the teacher can meet the needs of the student?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
The teacher could have a meeting with the parents of the child and suggest that the child meet with her vision teacher after school so it does not effect her education in the classroom. The teacher should also make sure to let the student know that the teacher can always answer her questions or help her if she cannot properly see the questions on her assignments. |

Comments: I do not think it is fair for the vision teacher and parent to have to make time out of their schedule to stay after school to work with the student. I think the vision and actually teacher need to communicate better and talk with parent to better the learning of the child. |

Comments: Answering questions for the student is not the answer. There are many other possibilities. |

Comments: I agree with this solution. The parents are with the student most of the time, so they should know exactly what helps the situation and what could make it work. Collaboring with the parents can be very beneficial for you and could save you a lot of time, planning, and frustration on your part. |

Comments: I think this is unnecessary and can be avoided if the teacher would just speak with the vision teacher and collaborate with them on how best to serve the student. Asking the student to add on to their school day is not needed and could cause a rift between the parents and the teacher. |
