  Case: Chewing Gum
Chewing gum at school is not allowed. Just recently it has started to become a major problem in the gym because the teachers are finding new gum stuck to the gym floor everyday. Each period we have between 100-150 students coming into the gym, and cannot possibly check every one to see if they have gum. What are some ways that we could better prevent students from chewing gum?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
My solution to this issue would work better at the start of the school year. For the first week or so I would stand at the door way with a trash can and require students to spit out their gum on their way in. After a week of this students will get the idea that if they don't want to waste their gum they will not chew it in the gym. While this won't completely fix the problem I believe if this is done for a week or two at the very beginning of the school year there will be less of an issue of it for the remainder of the year.

Comments: Being consistent at the beginning of the year will start off with the expectation that gum is not allowed. I believe that it is still possible to have someone stand at both locker room doors/gym entrance for two weeks and it will decrease. Potentially someone with planning could come down for the first ten minutes to help with the efforts.

Comments: Although this is a great suggestion, we have been enforcing it, but for some reason it is worse now.

Comments: This would be the solution I would use and seems it will help decrease the amount of gum being stuck to the floor but most likely won't eliminate the whole issue.

Comments: I think this is a great idea. Making rules clear at the beginning of the school year will prevent future rule-break (or at least for most).

Comments: I agree. Starting at the beginning of the year nips the problem in the bud before students get used to getting away with chewing gum. Making sure they know it is not tolerated from the beginning is the best way to prevent the problem to growing.

Comments: Very smart idea to have the problem fixed as soon as they walk into the classroom instead of catching them throughout class and disrupting class to fix the problem.

Comments: I agree that establishing this rule at the very beginning of the school year is key. If not, there is little to no hope of reducing the behavior mid-year.
