  Case: Too close for comfort
My son attends a different middle school from where I teach. I have a close friend who happens to teach at my son's middle school. She has been taking it upon herself to discuss my son's grades with his teachers, even though my friend DOES NOT teach my son. I am VERY bothered by this. I don't feel like, ethically, it is any of her business to discuss my son's academic affairs unless I bring it up in conversation and ask for her input. How should I handle this?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
It is definitely against the code of ethics. Unless your friend works directly with your child, that teacher has no right to discuss the grades with her especially if you haven't given consent for this to happen. I would definitely talk to the teacher first to let her know that you would like for her to stop discussing those grades or you will take it to a higher authority. I honestly think speaking to the teacher will solve this problem though.

Comments: Speaking with his teachers and letting them know that you would prefer them to discuss your sons progress with you only is a good way to handle the situation without offending your friend.

Comments: I think that speaking to this friend will help the situation as well. She may not realize her lapse in judgment and stop right there with this one conversation.

Comments: I agree with the solution as the friend should not be speaking about the student unless they are working with the student. I think that speaking with the teacher and informing them that if they can speak with you about the student and that if the friend does try to speak with the teacher then the teacher can politely inform them that they ethically cannot speak about the student of their grades.

Comments: I agree with the solution, it is not at all the other teachers responsibilities to even know your son's grades, and you need to speak with them directly. If there's not work however, then you do need to address a higher authority such as an administrator about the issue

Comments: I'd talk to your friend and advise her that though you appreciate her intent with helping that it's not necessary and you'd like it a lot better if she'd refrain from doing that.
