Case: Textbook Difficulty in Science & Social Studies
I have a two English Language Learners in my fourth grade class. In general, they read, write, and participate in class discussions in English at an average level for the class. However, they struggle with understanding the passages in their social studies and science textbook. Due to the schedule, I have to assign some of the material for homework. I do not speak or write their language. How can I help them better understand the content that they read? How can I help them to be more successful in the cont areas of social studies and science?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
This situation depends on the students reading level and their ability to read in their native language. The students that I come in contact with, cannot read in their native language therefore giving them a textbook in a different language will be just as difficult as the one in English. If they are reading below grade level in English, there are lots of resources on the internet that will level reading for students. One that I like to use is www.readinga-z.com; this website has lots of different levels readers for different subjects. Sometimes when you search for a topic you have to change your key words to find something and be flexible with what you find. Newsella will also level current events. If you can find a current event that is related to what you are learning about in the textbook, they at least have something to relate to. Also, you can do a visual dictionary for the students. Find key words that are essential for them to understand in the textbook and illustrate or find free clip art for the words. |

Comments: Leveling sounds like a great idea, when it's practical. I also like the clip art idea, or even giving demonstrations and repeating/writing the difficult words. |
