Case: Extra credit for attending study session?
I have a colleague that offered 5 pts on a test if students came in early and attended a study session before school. Is it right to offer extra credit like this? Shouldn't the material reviewed in the study session itself be the reward?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I have always been wary of giving extra credit of any form. I generally prefer for the students' grades to be a reflection of their knowledge of the material. However, I had a discussion with a colleague this week in which I asked her to clarify her rationale for offering extra credit. She made the case that she offered the extra credit opportunities so that the students would work extra hard to learn the material that they otherwise would not have learned. That makes sense to me. In this case, I am a bit wary of cramming the material down their throats the day of the test. I question whether they actually learn the material rather than just memorizing it. I would feel better about it if she offered the extra credit to complete a task that would help to learn the material.

Comments: I agree with you. Creating something that students can complete to earn the extra credit is better than offering it for simply showing up.

Comments: I feel you make a very valid point in stating that extra-credit is better rewarded for completing tasks that enrich a students knowledge instead of cramming for a test. I've always been fond of 1st credit!

Comments: I think that you should have to do something besides attend the study session like you should given them a question pertainign t the session and they have to finish it before they leave

Comments: I agree - there's a bit of give and take to the practice. It could set up good habits for students, but it could also do the opposite and give them a bad habit, like cramming for exams.
