Case: Offensive Comments
If you were teaching a social studies lesson about Native Americans. What would you do if one of your students makes a comment like, "The Indians helped the white settlers?. How would you handle this situation?

I would use this as an opportunity to explain the Native American culture. It is important to confirm that the Native Americans did in fact helped the white settlers, but when stating this confirmation, say, "Yes, the Native Americans helped the European immigrants because in their culture it is important to be giving." From there, you can go into specific practices and beliefs of different tribes (even if it's not in their standards) in order to make the lesson more multicultural by providing more background as to why the Native Americans would have wanted to help the new settlers. |
