Case: Offensive Comments
If you were teaching a social studies lesson about Native Americans. What would you do if one of your students makes a comment like, "The Indians helped the white settlers?. How would you handle this situation?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I would use this opportunity to talk about the difference between Native Americans and Indians since there is a difference--Native Americans are the indigenous people of the United States and Indians are people who identify their country of origin as India. I would also make sure to talk to students about stereotyping and misrepresentation. Just like you may not want to be referred to a certain way, they might feel the same way. |

Comments: This solution is useful, however, I think it may confuse the children because of the different kinds of Indians, and you have to be careful how you approach that subject as well. |

Comments: That is a good idea. Educate them about it and hopefully they will understand and change their minds next time they were going to say it. |

Comments: I think that is is a great solution. Providing insight on the differences is a great opportunity for students to expand their cultural awareness and understand the issues regarding stereotyping and misrepresentation. |

Comments: IF I were in this situation I would exactly do this. Explaining things in a logical manner is the best solution. |
