Case: Letting Go
Teaching four year old children can be difficult, because some of the students' parents are not ready to let their children be independent. For example, I have a parent that does not let her child go on field trips unless she can go. By doing this, the child is missing out on a lot of great experiences. How can I convince this parent to let her child attend field trips?
Solution: (Rates are posted for this solution!)
I don't think this is something that you will be able to change. I had a parent in seventh grade that still walked her daughter to her locker every single morning and picked her up from school by her locker. It was exhausting just to see this parent every day! As a parent, I don't think it is a teacher's right to tell a parent when to let go. You can mention how sad you are that the student will be missing the trip because of x, y, and z reasons. Other than that, it is ultimately the parents decision. |

Comments: I think you are right on that. Letting go of a child is tough, specially at that age. You make great points. |

Comments: I do not agree with this because there should be a way to communicate with the parent and build a better relationship with them so they feel more comfortable letting their child experience these field trips. |

Comments: Though it is ultimately the parents decisions, you can try to positively influence the mother in favor of the daughter being able to be more independent. |

Comments: I agree you cannot tell a parent on how to parent in this situation because at some point parents have to find on their own will to let go. Of course it is appropriate to express that you are sad students may miss an opportunity. Or even in a conference meeting you can bring up that the child needs to become more independent and suggest to the parent allowing the student to do things on their own. However, you can not completely expect a parent to let the child go when you say. |

Comments: I agree - it isn't a teacher's responsibility or business to advise a parent when to let go. That has to happen on their own terms. Perhaps providing as much information as possible (outline for the trip) and suggesting that the parent go outside of school prior to the fieldtrip to get an idea of the location would be helpful. |

Comments: You have a really good point. In the end, especially with young children, it is the parents choice and freedom to choose when they are ready to let their child go places with or without them. This is more of a disappointing circumstance than one that effects the child or other child's education and safety. I agree with this solution. |

Comments: If you build rapport with the student and the parent, you can definitely solve this problem. The parent just has concerns and needs to know you are accessible and trustworthy. |
