All students need informational content that might influence the context for reading or historical comprehension. However, this is different from celebrating holidays. Provide alternative assignments that are aligned with the same goals as the rest of the kids for students with religious preferences to participate in. I would change their assignments based upon their beliefs. I think these students should feel included and that their religion is not wrong. They deserve respect and not be singled out just because of beliefs. I would also point out that the celebration is not manditory but an assignment about what we learned about the holiday could be required and would ask the parents if they are problmes with that. If it is a celebration, I would inform the student that he or she was not required to participate.
