The parents want you to put a stop toa misbehavior
A parent calls to complain about the behavior of one of the third-grade students in your class. The student writes on the back of the other children's T-shirts, wipes paint from a brush onto their jeans, and pushes, kicks, and tries to trip them as they walk past him in class and on the playground. The parents want you to put a stop to this kind of behavior in your classroom and on the playground. What are your thoughts about what you might do in this particular situation? |

I would assure the parent that the problem will be taken care of.I would make a whole class announcement that bullying is not acceptable in the classroom and that there will be consequences if it is observed. I would also contact other sources in the school to put a stop to bullying because the school may have to take the matter into its own hands. There may be a different way that the school deals with this kind of problem and it is always smart to get outside help. I would also let other teachers know of the problem so that they circulate the playground and look for any signs of bullying. |

I agree with this solution. I think addressing the class and making it clear that you will not tolerate the behavior is a good strategy. I would also remind the class that writing on another students clothes could possibly damage them, and would cost the parents money to replace. |

This is a very difficult situation that all teachers will face more than once throughout their career. As a teacher I would seek the advice from the guidance counselor or assistant principle. If that doesn't work I would conduct a conference with both of the students' parents to discuss the matter and encourage suggestions from the parents as to creating a plan of action to eliminate the problem. In other word, seek family involvement. |

I would send the parent complaints to the principal or behavior management team at the school. If a parent is calling to complain, and the behaviors that are being complained about are as extreme as described (pushing, kicking, tripping), a referral has already been filed. More than likely, the teacher is having a problem with the student as well. By pushing the complaints to the principal, on top of the complaints the teacher is already saying, the principal will make an effort to change the classroom setting of the student. |
