These parents?
An interviewee is being spoken to about a possible job position at her child's school. She was a parent before she became a candidate. The principal asked the candidate, "are you sure you can work with these parents?". The candidate knew exactly what he meant, as she was one of those parents. Those parents are extremely involved and have very high expectations and a very loud voice with a far community outreach. That question could go one or two ways. How would you respond?

Yes I could work with concern parents for I was one of those parents who were extremely involved. I know exactly what I want to hear as a parent therefore I would definitely know what to say as an employee.

"I am confident that I can work with any parent. My first-hand experience with highly involved families puts me in a position of understanding the resources that these families have, and I look forward to using it to my classroom's advantage."

I would just respond with "As being one of these parents, I know that they are just concerned with their child's education. I would really like to help ensure them that their children will get a very good education with me."

I would respond that I believe I can work with all parents because the success of students depend on it, and that is my ultimate goal. There is no teaching situation where all parents are involved at the same level, and as educators it is our job to make sure they are involved as much as possible and in ways that will positively affect their child's learning.

The parent/interviewee could respond that she is more than capable of assisting in parent needs and expectations. She can also state that she knows exactly how to accommodate "those parents" due to the simple fact that she is one of the "high maintenance" parents that the principal is speaking about.

As we want parents to be involved in their child's education, I would promote this involvement.

That is an EXTREMELY unprofessional comment for an administrator to make! Whether you were a parent or not! I would explain that my priority as an educator is the safety and education of the students, and that I would deal with parental issues only when they arise. I would also state that you were not going to pre-judge the parents of students that you had not even met.
