In order to advance in her town, things like church attendance and voting Republican seem to be taken in to unspoken account. Carrie has recently heard one of her fellow teachers telling students her personal story of salvation, telling students her personal beliefs on the immorality of homosexuality and playing Christian music during class. She also witnessed a teacher correcting to female students who were holding hands while walking down the hallway, telling them "You need to set a good example, so don't hold hands." Carrie feels that the teacher's behavior is incorrect, but fears that if she speaks up, she will not have her contract renewed. It is not a question of opinion, it is a legal issue. If you witness the inappropriate behavior you are responsible for speaking up for the students' sake. You should provide specific examples for the administrator so that it can be promptly addressed. I would bring up this issue with administration and allow them to take the proper steps. If administration gives her a hard time about coming forward, and she truly fears that her contract will not be renewed, she should go beyond her school and talk with the superintendent or other higher ups in the district. Terminating this teacher for trying to uphold the code of ethics would in itself be unethical. I'm sure they would keep her anonymous, but take action investigating the situation. Talk to her kinda with respect, state that your confused and want to make sure you are " setting a good example" Then listen to what she says. If that doesn't work then bring it up to the administration. I wouldn't be afraid to speak up, doing it with respect goes along way.
