Athletic students?
I have seen many students focusing on diets (keto, paleo, etc) and their body image while trying to say they're aiming for health and athleticism. Where does this come into play in an educational classroom? Should this kind of talk be banned, or utilized?

I personally think it is amazing when our youth is health conscious. In this day and age there is so much competition in sports. Our students have so much pressure put on them trying to earn sports scholarships. I worry about them over lifting, or exerting themselves to hard for long periods. With the health diet and such I would not ban the conversation at all. I would just have a rule that the conversation cannot disrupt class or instruction time. There is way worse things they could be doing or talking about.

My personal advise: Do not ever ban something if you can avoid it. What's the first thing a student does when they learn something is banned? They test that rule.

You could utilize this opportunity to your advantage depending on the scenario. If you cannot take advantage of it, though, try to find something else for the group to talk about.

This is the course of action I would take if I had to, just make sure it's not disrupting class time and that everyone is eating and keeping down what they eat. We don't need those kinds of "diets".

I think that this is an awesome thing that students are worried about their health. Students knowing that maintaining a diet is better for their health is important to learn at a young at. Where I would cross the line would be if students began making fun of other students for not being on a diet or not worrying about their body image. Students are allowed to be confident in themselves but not at the expense of the other students feelings.

I don't think it should be banned. It is great that youth are more health conscious because exercise and a healthy diet can prevent some diseases. Athletics are great to build teamwork skills and get in shape. As long as a student is not disrupting the class or missing instruction because of sports, it is fine to talk about health and athletics in the classroom.

I don't think it should be banned. Maybe have a conversation with the whole class about it and try and incorporate health lessons into other subjects. If it comes to an issue, where students are making fun of others or belittling or forcing them into something they don't want to do, I would talk to those students individually.

I think it's really great that students are getting more into eating and being healthy. I think it would be a good idea to touch on it in class and how to use diets for health reasons more than body image. A lot of kids focus too much on self image in school. It becomes a major bullying issue. It's important to be healthy but they are still growing kids and need to eat. You can be healthy and such without starving oneself. I don't think dieting or the talk of it should be banned but I do think it needs to be discussed in class at an appropriate age to be a concern.

I would let the students know that they need to talk about this kind of stuff when they have free time. Not while the teacher is reading the lesson.

This is a good thing to notice because they can easily become obsessive. Play some videos about the benefits of being athletic and some body positive clips as well. Incorporate health and athleticism.

No, I don't think it should be banned especially if they are pushing to be healthy. Obviously this can be a learning opportunity, make a lesson out of it for science. Make the activities engaging, teaching them about their bodies, the positive relationships we can have with ourselves mentality and with food. This is such a great moment to have with students to explain that all body types are good body types and that just because we may not look the same doesn't mean we aren't good people. I think that you could explain in the lesson all the great things food and exercise can do for your body and that it can look different on everyone, because some students have this idea engrained in their head that if you eat healthy and exercise there is only one body type that should be looked at as acceptable. I just think this is a great opportunity to share with your class and to have a positive moment with.

I would use this concept to teach about mental health and the importance of eating a healthy diet, and what that would look like. Teach students about calories and fats, the good ones and the bad ones.

I think it is awesome that the students are so health conscience. Being in sports does require you to take care of your body and what you put in it. If the students are having healthy conversations about it and it does not disrupt the class, I think it is fine. If possible (depending on subject/grade level) you could turn it into a lesson one day. Clearly it is something they enjoy discussing, and you could turn it into a learning opportunity.

I think that if the curriculum suits it i.e. science and metabolism the teacher should embrace this as a good teaching opportunity. It is also good for a teacher trying to build repertoire with students to find what interests them.

Utilized. Research it or make it a research project about healthy dieting and how to do it properly.

I would say this kind of talk should be utilized. If you notice that the speech is more body image based and coming from a place of insecurity as opposed to health and fitness, use that as an educational opportunity. Speak with the P.E. coaches and encourage them to teach healthy views on fitness and diets when they have your students.

I think that if it is not disturbing the class it should not be something to be concerned. to me, if the kid is doing such a diet the parents know about it and if they know it shouldn't be the teachers problem.

As long as their conversations are not disrupting teaching time I don't see why this talk is anything to be concerned with. It's excellent that the students are concerned about their health an what they are putting in their bodies. It's a lot better than when I was in high school and we were limiting ourselves to one meal a day to stay skinny.
