Too close for comfort
My son attends a different middle school from where I teach. I have a close friend who happens to teach at my son's middle school. She has been taking it upon herself to discuss my son's grades with his teachers, even though my friend DOES NOT teach my son. I am VERY bothered by this. I don't feel like, ethically, it is any of her business to discuss my son's academic affairs unless I bring it up in conversation and ask for her input. How should I handle this?

It is definitely against the code of ethics. Unless your friend works directly with your child, that teacher has no right to discuss the grades with her especially if you haven't given consent for this to happen. I would definitely talk to the teacher first to let her know that you would like for her to stop discussing those grades or you will take it to a higher authority. I honestly think speaking to the teacher will solve this problem though.

As a parent and fellow education professional, you have every right to be upset and disturbed. With that being said, I would address the teacher first in hopes that some level of understanding can be achieved. Hopefully, addressing the teacher will serve as a direct and positive solution.

The ethical issue in this situation is on the side of your child's teacher. His teacher should not be discussing his performance with anyone except those authorized. Regardless of whether or not your close friend works at the school and takes it upon herself to checkup on your child, she is not the parent. Your child's teacher is disregarding confidentiality of student records.

It is against the code of ethics, the teacher has no business getting in the middle of your son and his academics. I would sit down and have a conversation with this teacher and express my concerns.
