Tough Interview Question- Retakes
I went on a job interview quite some time ago; however, there is one question that continues to stump me and I'm not quite sure I could have answered it. The principal asked me what my views were on allowing students to retake tests. Would I take the average? What happens if students fail the first one on purpose, only to get a high A on every retake? I wasn't sure how to answer this because the county where I came from only allowed one retake per 9 weeks. How would you answer a question like this? In my experience, retake rules were always decided at the county level. |

In the interview, I might would mention that in your experiences the county level or school level decided the procedures for retakes. I would let them know I would follow whatever rule was in place for retakes. However, you then might would suggest your opinion on retakes. You know some students don't perform well on tests and also, some students might have had a rough night at home the night before. You would allow retakes until a student took advantage of the opportunity. Those are my opinions, but you could express yours in the interview. |

A limited amount of retakes per semester is a great way for students to not take advantage of the system. Averaging the two grades may encourage students to do well on both the first test and the retake. |

I personally take the average of the two tests. If a student fails it intentionally to see what is on it, just to retest and to do better, it does not help because the score is averaged together and it is never the same test just the same concepts. I also offer Retests because you always have students who scored a B and they really want to improve and get an A, so if they want to study more and strive to improve, all power to them. I used to only allow students who failed tests the opportunity to Retests but I changed that policy this year due to a college professor allowing me the opportunity to correct my own work. So I thought it was only fair I treat my students the same. Our principal leaves the decision up to the individual teacher to decide whether or not to Retests. |

It is smart to definitely follow the county's rules; however, I saw a study on how allowing retakes can be translated into skills for the real world. Jobs today do not make you turn in one proposal and then you are done, even if it's bad. Employers have you submit drafts, work with other employees, make revisions, ask for help and feedback, and allow the opportunity to get to your best final work. I think that by allowing retakes, it encourages students to try their best without being penalized for their mistakes. Now if they take advantage of it, then I would rethink letting them, but for now, I would encourage the opportunity for retakes. |
