Classroom Fighting
As an intern I witnessed two of my students get into a physical altercation. The other teacher in the room with me moved the other students aside and then pulled the two students into the hallway to discuss with them the matter privately while I watched the rest of the class. The two boys were separated for the remainder of the period and administration was called. I asked my teacher why and she didn't call and she said she handled it and there wasn't any need to get admin involved. What could have been done differently? Why didn't my teacher report the alteration to administration?

The teacher probably knew things that we do not. So considering the context, maybe getting the admin involved would have only made things worse or not have been effective at all. Maybe the teacher did everything perfectly in the situation, we just don’t know it yet. This could be true. However, it is still the teacher’s responsibility to report any physical violence, regardless of circumstance, as it’s a school rule and not a classroom rule being broken. Additionally, it is important that when asked, the teacher should report their knowledge of the situation as well.

I think that she may have had a relationship with these students and may have understood some things that maybe you did not know. I think if there is a physical altercation that admin should be involved but i guess that would be the only thing that would make sense to me.

Maybe the teacher had information that you were not aware of. I do still think the administration should have been made aware that there was a situation in the classroom as that is there right to know what has happened.

Administration should be alerted of all physical altercations so that records can be kept showing the situation wasn't ignored. However, the teacher can share with administration how they resolved the issue so administration can decide whether it would be more beneficial or harmful by involving an assistant principal or guidance. Sometimes issues can be handled without involving more people.

Administration should be aware of every altercation because they are tracked in a database. It is very important to track misbehavior no matter the circumstance.

If the teacher believes that she handled it and there won't be any more fighting between the boys for the rest of the day, then I do not see why the administration needs to be called.

I suspect that the teacher could have dreaded the effects of getting administration involved. Perhaps they assumed they can determine the intensity of the physical altercation and only take further action if the situation was "bad" enough. However, the repercussions of this for the teacher could be severe if a parent were to become aware of this event and call the school. The break in communication that the teacher caused not only makes the school look unprofessional, but poses a school safety hazard as well.

I think based on this context, it would come down to if this is a recurring thing between these students or one of the students. Generally, I would say admin would get involved if a behavior becomes a pattern and the teacher can't handle it herself.

You did the right thing in separating the students, but in any case the administration should have been notified about the incident as the principle and other teachers would find out regardless due to student gossip and rumors. It is also important to involve them as their is no guarantee that the students would not start fighting again in or outside of school and may lead to the situation escalating beyond anyone's control.
