These students are constantly in her office when they should be in class and when any of them are written up they receive barely a slap on the wrist if anything. This same principal sends out emails to the school telling teachers to not send students to her office without her permission, but when students wander in after getting permission to go to the bathroom she lets them stay. How do you handle this?                 Submit a Possible Solution Please read response(s) below (if any) before posting your solution.                 Solution 1 Posted October 3, 2015 2:53 am Tamupy Reps: 100 If one of my students was going to the assistant principal's office when they asked me to use the restroom I would create new classroom procedures regarding the restroom. Rules: One person at a time, Return to class as soon as you are done. Do not wander around campus when you ask to use the restroom. Then I would explain the consequences if they do not follow the rules: first: verbal warning, second: note home to parent, third: phone call home to parents. If this does not stop my student(s) from going to the assistant principal's office then I would ask to schedule a meeting with the assistant principal. I would tell the assistant principal that I are implementing new classroom rules about the restroom and students are not to wander campus, including coming to his or her office. Please do not allow students to come to your office and send them immediately back to class so they do not miss instruction. I would thank the assistant principal for his or help with the situation. If they were my students, I would give them a consequence for visiting the principal instead of being in my class. I would not allow the students out of the class, except for using the restroom, and if I discovered they were visiting the principal- I would not excuse their missed work. If that doesn't work, I would keep track of the amount of time the students spent with the principal, the amount of work they missed and their grades. Hopefully, the principal will realize that the innocent visits are hindering their education. When your students continue to wander into the office just tell them that you prefer them to be in the classroom. This is a tough position because this is your boss disrupting instruction. First, contact the parents and get them involved. When they question why the student is missing your class, they will eventually figure out the principal is involved without you having to tell them. Don't let the students make up work when they aren't in class. Their grades will start falling and they will quit missing class. Last thing, stop writing them up. When I had this issue, I just handled everything myself. Sure, it was a big of an inconvenience, but you have the power to make their lives miserable when your principal won't. There are just some students that you connect more. But it's how you treat the situation and that situation where the students are lying about going to the bathroom and instead hanging out with the assistant principal is not appropriate. Maybe speak to the assistant principal how the students leaving constantly is disrupting your class. I would have a talk with the principal first and let them know that you have not given these students permission to wander into her office and that next time it happens it would be very helpful if she directed them back to the classroom promptly as to not miss important instruction. I would then have a talk with the group of students and let them know that this is unacceptable behavior and try an alternative consequence technique rather than sending them to the principals office such as sending a note home to their parents. However, be mindful of the principal no matter the action you take.
